Storytelling/Art as History: Four 50 minute lessons (or standard class period) on American Revolution curriculum, 4th grade lessons: Overview, Protests, Battles, Declaration of Independence. Students analyze paintings, music, cartoons, other artworks to tell parts of the story, e.g., 3 artists’ interpretations of the Boston Massacre; an illustration of a woman Patriot spying on British officers. Storytelling/Art as History: Turn of the 20th Century Immigration: 1 lesson. World War I - 4 lessons: How the War Began, The Trench War, America's Role, WWI Propaganda Art. Students analyze paintings, music, cartoons, photography and battlefield sketches to understand WWI, e.g., paintings by Otto Dix, Flanders' Field art and poetry, propaganda posters. Students analyze paintings, music, cartoons, photography to understand historical period, e.g.,Yellow Journalism cartoons/propaganda; Black Cowboys' Wild West; Andy Warhol's Annie Oakley; Harlem Renaissance: "Satchmo", Ella Fitzgerald, Langston Hughes, Zora Hurston, etc. Prohibition & Suffragette Movement: art, dance, styles, music.
